Fatal Wall Collapse Triggers Mayan Apocalypse Panic

While it would appear that December 21, 2012 has arrived without the world coming to a dramatic and violent end, last night many folks living in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo, had good reason to think that the Mayan Apocalypse was in fact underway.

Late Thursday evening, just hours before some feared global catastrophe would strike, a massive wall collapsed in Sorocaba’s city center, causing the ground to rumble and triggering public among locals that the end was nigh.

“It shook the whole house. I thought it was an earthquake,” says Edígenes Alves Goncalves, who lives nearby. ”At the time, I yelled, ‘it’s the end of the world!’ There were lots people yelling in the street.”

The incident occurred along the wall of an old textile mill which had been slated for renovation, just across the road from a major bus terminal. Seven people were killed and one was injured in the collapse.
