One moment, electrician Rodrigo Soares was driving home from work at the end of a normal day — the next, he was standing on the roadside, lucky to be alive, but suddenly in need of ride.
After hours of heavy rain, a massive crater formed along a roadway in Campo Grande, Brazil as the muddy soil gave way. According to Soares, he believed the hazard was just a shallow pothole when he decided to drive over it — but that’s when he felt his car begin to sink. Luckily, he managed to undo his seatbelt and escape before getting too deep.
“I thought it best to preserve life than to worry about the car,” say Soares.
As seen in the harrowing video above, it is possible to see just how quickly the car was swallowed into the massive sinkhole. Soares says that the car was not insured, but plans to seek compensation from the city for his losses.
